I began my journey in the home improvement industry with The Home Depot in Miami in 1992. By 1996, I was deeply involved in liquidations. Digital media company, CyberMax, built a website for Wickes Lumber Company, and Buildscape took it to market, converting the builder trade to online commerce. Serving the fragmented, "mom & pop" lumberyards across the US, Buildscape, a subsidiary of Dow Chemical, was tasked with creating excitement to convert builders into online users. Closeouts and opportunity buy provided the needed excitement, with offers like "Power Tools Starting at $1"! This strategy effectively attracted attention and engaged potential customers with discounted products, creating the online traffic and excitement needed to convert users into customers.
One memorable example was when American Standard needed to dump five truckloads of rainbow-colored toilet tanks and toilet bowls. The entire lot went to a plumbing dealer in Michigan for his annual sidewalk sale, creating excitement and drawing customers.
The Dot Com Bubble of the 90s burst, leading Dow Chemical to disband Buildscape. From there, I co-founded Surplus-Liquidation, Inc. in 2001. The business quickly expanded with retail outlets under the Contractors Best and Home Renovation Outlet brands. By 2006, we had five stores in Florida. Although the Great Recession of 2007 impacted our retail operations, our wholesale business survived and thrived.
Formerly known as Home Center Closeouts, HG Liquidations continues as a wholesale distributor of building products, specializing in closeouts, seconds, obsolete items, revisions, and buy-backs. My passion for people, solving problems, and creating value drives me and my business forward every day.
